The sky, looking like a big blank movie screen, does not give any clues to the upcoming weather. Will it remain placid or is this the calm before the storm? Will winter return once again? In this painting, the breakwater appears pencil-thin yet it can withstand the relentless attack of crashing waves from Lake Michigan. Man-made infrastructure has never ceased to amaze me. As a community, we take responsibility to protect and collectively work together for the common well-being of all.

This painting is all about the flag. The question is who protects it? As I was sketching and taking photos, volunteer lighthouse keepers came out to take the flag down for the night. I engaged in a lengthy conversation with them. They were healthcare providers from the Detroit area. The volunteers talked about how they cared for their patients unconditionally, no matter what was necessary. I had no idea of a title for this painting until I saw it finished. Teachers protect children from gunfire with their lives. A neighbor runs into a burning house to save a friend. Strangers band together to save a life. Our sons and daughters serve in our armed forces. We all answer the call of duty in some way. We are not a military society. We are not a police society. We are a caring society. We are all charged to protect the flag. We are all guardians of one belief…. democracy.

Niagara Falls is a reminder that strength does not always announce itself with words. The constant flow of water has shaped the landscape for thousands of years through persistence rather than force. Watching the falls, I found myself thinking about the power of endurance, the passage of time, and the ways we are all shaped by the experiences that flow through our lives.

Winter often feels endless in Northern Michigan, but eventually the ice begins to break and the landscape starts to awaken. As the sunlight stretches across the frozen surface of Lake Michigan, channels of open water emerge and trace new paths through the ice. This scene reminds me that change often arrives gradually. What appears frozen and still today may already be moving toward renewal, growth, and a new season ahead.

From high atop the bluff, the vastness of Lake Michigan stretches beyond the horizon. As the sun rises over the frozen water, light breaks through the clouds and transforms the scene. Moments like this remind me that even during the coldest seasons, there is beauty, hope, and the promise of warmer days ahead.
